I also use the spring hoops and understand about the trouble with the tension. I ALWAYS leave my work in the hoop until I am ready to move to another spot to work. It doesn't affect the finished product because I wash gently, let dry and press with a steam iron. I picked up cross-stitch again after many years and found that I needed help seeing my work. I ordered a lighted magnifying stand which plugs in to an outlet. I LOVE it and now couldn't work without it.
